CHARACTERS

PEARL PRYNNE 12 years old daughter of Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale, although she does not know the latter is her father. Not a sweet child, she is prone to tantrums, beating up other children, invoking devils, nearly burning the house down, and running away. She is infinitely curious, and not knowing who her father is or why her mother wears that ‘A’ drives her crazy. She would really like to fly.

HESTER PRYNNE 36 years old, mother of Pearl. Married to Roger Chillingworth almost 20 years ago in England. Because they could not have children, Roger sent her away to the New World. Hester has not seen Roger in 14 years. Once in Boston, Hester met and fell in love with Arthur Dimmesdale, the reverend, and bore a child. As it was known she was married, and her husband was not in Boston, she was found guilty of adultery and shamed publicly. She wears a large, ornate ‘A’ embroidered in scarlet on her bodice at all times. She is passionate and wild, much like her daughter, but has carefully suppressed these things to survive in Puritan society. She is dry, funny, sarcastic, and a great seamstress and cook. She has discovered she doesn’t really need a husband and she likes her independence. She loves Arthur Dimmesdale, but is very attracted to Roger Chillingworth.

ARTHUR DIMMESDALE Mid 40’s. The Reverend of the Church of Boston, Hester’s lover, and Pearl’s father. Dimmesdale actually conducted the public interrogation of Hester, exhorting her to name her lover, but could not muster the strength to confess himself. He cares for Pearl as much as possible from a discreet distance. He cannot cook whatsoever, and thus has a secret arrangement with Hester in which he provides for her and Pearl to some extent, and she cooks for him. Hester is the only woman Dimmesdale has ever loved. He suffers from guilt associated with the long concealment of his sin. He is very concerned with the appearance of propriety and keeping his position. Despite all this, he is deeply spiritual and truly believes his preaching.

ROGER CHILLINGWORTHMid 50’s. Hester’s long-lost husband. A scholar, tutor, and physician. Vengeful, selfish, conniving, charming, evil, and extremely sexy. He sent Hester away from England on the belief that she could not bear him children. He had not intended to follow when he sent her away, but after two years or so, changed his mind. En route, he was shipwrecked and had various other misadventures. Upon arriving in the New World, he spent about 10 years living with assorted bands of Native Americans. Upon learning that Hester had a child by another man, he will not rest until he exacts revenge on that man.

THOMAS BELLINGHAMMid 60’s or older. The town magistrate. Lecherous, pompous, and in the end, somewhat harmless. He is clearly unaware that he presides over a small town in a small colony thousands of miles away from civilization; one would think he was the Archbishop of Canterbury from the way he comports himself.

MISTRESS HIBBINS/HUNCHMistress Hibbins is the niece of Thomas Bellingham and known in town to be a witch. Her witch name is Hunch. She is the leader of the trio of witches. She is older than Squiddle and younger than Nobs. She is fairly practical, as witches go.

GOODY SHELLEY/SQUIDDLE/SUSANNAH WILSON Goody Shelley is one of the townswomen. She’s the youngest of the trio. Squiddle is Goody Shelley’s witch alias, and Squiddle is a little odd and very horny. This actress also plays Susannah Wilson, who is Pearl’s age and the daughter of the Governor.

GOODY NETTER/NOBSThe oldest of the townswomen and witches, Goody Netter’s witch name is Nobs. She tends to be dry, matter of fact, and funny. All of the witches are respectable townswomen by day, and liberated mistresses of the Devil by night. They enjoy drinking a potion of various hallucinogens and dancing beneath the full moon. Especially when a sexy man like Roger Chillingworth shows up.
